Gulf of Maine Research Institute - Developing a Modeling Orientation to Science
In 2023 I teamed up with Asher Brown of Brown Barn Studios to help tell the story of data modeling in the classroom.
We worked closely with the folks at Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Bowdoin, and surrounding participating grade schools to gather a better understanding of the challenges in teaching data modeling to students and it's importance.
Asher wanted a specific first person "to the audience" feel to our interviews, a fun challenge to achieve across multiple subjects.
We also went into the field with teachers and classrooms to capture hands on activities necessary for data modeling.
From Brown Barn Studios...
This project seeks to understand how middle school students’ participation in scientific modeling informs their classroom-based citizen science investigations, and how enhancing teachers’ learning about modeling changes both the opportunities students have to participate in scientific modeling and their understanding of change within ecosystems. This research is conducted in partnership between researchers at GMRI, Vanderbilt University, and Bowdoin College.
Special thanks to the teachers who participated in this work: Monica Wright, Amanda Sommi, Kyle Beeton, Cynthia Nye, Angela Gospodarek, Laura Seaver, Lacey Todd, Katrina Heimbach, and Natalie Webber.
